Icelandic market leader chooses Memphis for delivery of data
to clients
Icelandic market research firm Capacent - formerly IMG/Gallup
- has agreed to further extend its use of Memphis Survey Explorer
and Transformer throughout the sophisticated Icelandic market.
Capacent currently delivers data in the Memphis format to
hundreds of users throughout the country and has grown substantially
based on Memphis as the main data delivery tool. The relationship
goes back to 1995 with Gallup Iceland.
Capacent is based on the solid foundation of a few powerful
veteran consulting, recruitment, and research companies. Capacent
emerged in its current form early in 2005, when IMG and KPMG
Consulting united their forces to create the largest and most
powerful knowledge company in it’s field in Iceland.
Courage and a determination to evolve define this young company.
The company as it is today has been formed through several
mergers aimed at creating a world-class knowledge company.
The year 2005 heralded a turning point in the history of
this young company as Capacent branched out to Denmark with
the acquisition of KPMG Advisory Services. In early 2006,
LogistikGruppen was added to that operation. „A foundation
for a powerful North-European knowledge company has been laid,“
said Skúli Gunnsteinsson, CEO of Capacent, in an interview
with the Danish business journal Börsen. A systematic
reorganization of the company followed. A special parent company
(IMG Eignarhaldsfélag) was formed to focus on further
extension of the operations in Northern-Europe. The presidents
of the subsidiaries are Ragnar Þórir Guðgeirsson,
who leads Capacent in Iceland, and Bjarni Snæbjörn
Jónsson, who leads Capacent in Denmark. The objective
of the operations in both countries is to help managers improve
performance by offering solutions in the fields of research,
consulting, and recruitment.

ACNielsen-AMER in the Middle East
using Survey Explorer software from Memphis
ACNielsen was established in the United States in 1923 by
Arthur C. Nielsen, Sr., one of the founders of the modern
marketing research industry. Among many innovations in consumer-focused

performance and the impact of their marketing and sales programs
on revenues and profits. Nielsen information gave practical
meaning to the concept of market share and made it one of
the critical measures of corporate performance. Mr. Nielsen

Novo Nordisk
Novo Nordisk has the broadest diabetes
product portfolio in the industry. They also have a leading
position in areas such as haemostasis management, growth hormone
therapy and hormone replacement therapy.
Novo Nordisk's history spans more than 80 years. The story
begins in 1922 when a Danish couple, August and Marie Krogh,
travelled to America. August Krogh was a professor at the
University of Copenhagen who had received the Nobel Prize
in physiology. His wife, Marie Krogh, was a doctor and researcher
in metabolic diseases. Marie also suffered from late-onset
(type 2) diabetes.
While in America the Kroghs heard of two Canadian researchers,
Frederick Banting and Charles Best, who were treating people
with diabetes with an insulin extract from bovine pancreases.
The Kroghs were very interested in this treatment because
of Marie's diabetes, and they ultimately were granted permission
to produce insulin in Denmark.
On their return to Denmark, Krogh and Dr H C Hagedorn, a
specialist in the regulation of blood sugar, decided that
some extensive research was required. They called on the Danish
pharmacist August Kongsted who offered to pay for the research
and help start production. On 21 December 1922 the two men
succeeded in extracting a small quantity of insulin from a
bovine pancreas and the first patients were treated in March
1923. In spring 1923 they founded Nordisk Insulinlaboratorium
(Nordisk).
In 1923 the engineer Harald Pedersen joined Nordisk to build
the machines used for insulin production. His brother, Thorvald
Pedersen, was later recruited to analyse the chemical processes
during insulin production. However, Thorvald Pedersen did
not get on with Hagedorn, and in 1924 Hagedorn fired him.
Out of loyalty to his brother Harald resigned and the two
brothers set up on their own. By 1924 they too were successfully
producing insulin and in 1925 the brothers sent a letter to
Danish pharmacists informing them that Insulin Novo and the
newly developed Novo syringe were now on sale. The brothers
named their company Novo Terapeutisk Laboratorium (Novo).
There were now two firms in Denmark that were to develop into
the world's leading manufacturers of insulin.
Over the next 65 years both companies rapidly expanded. Both
established large research units and competed furiously to
be the first on the market with new products for the treatment
of diabetes. Nordisk and Novo also both began to diversify
by developing other products. Novo became the world's largest
producer of industrial enzymes, and Nordisk developed drugs
for the treatment of haemophilia and growth disorders.
In January 1989 Novo and Nordisk decided to join forces.
Having competed with each other for more than 60 years, the
two companies could now concentrate their combined forces
on developing new products for treating diabetes and on conquering
world markets. The new company was called Novo Nordisk A/S.
In early 1999 it was decided that Novo Nordisk would demerge
into two main businesses: Healthcare and Enzymes. The demerger
enables the two businesses to increase their operational freedom
and focus on what they do best. On 14 November 2000 Novo Nordisk
and Novozymes began operating as two separately listed companies.
And so the story continues...

Release 31st August 2004
IPSOS UK extends its contract
with Memphis for in-house licences for the Media Explorer
and the Media Transformer
The Media Explorer – a new software product
Memphis has in 1999 developed the Media Explorer in conjunction
with Ipsos-RSL (now IPSOS UK). The aim of the partnership
between Memphis and Ipsos-RSL was initially to produce an
easy-to-use and visually appealing package for analysis of
the BARB Audience Reaction Service, which has been run by
Ipsos-RSL since 1994.
The development of the Media Explorer took place in the first
half of 1999, and the product was launched in August 1999.
The Media Explorer consists of the standard Survey Explorer
plus additional interfaces for TV and Radio data. The Survey
Explorer and the other interfaces are intimately linked so,
for example, filters created in one part of the Media Explorer
are automatically active in all other parts.
Memphis Media Explorer was presented at the Worldwide Electronic
and Broadcast Audience Research Conference held in conjunction
by the ARF and ESOMAR at the Sheraton Bal Harbour, Miami,
Florida during the 8th and 9th May 2000. Memphis International
participated with an Exhibition Stand at the Conference Center.
Some 500 delegates from 56 countries attended this ARF/ESOMAR
conference for the World Association of Research Professionals;
over 100 delegates visited the Memphis Stand to obtain demo
CD disks, documentation and demonstrations of the Memphis
Media Explorer.
Memphis Media Explorer received enormous exposure at this
WORLDWIDE ELECTRONIC AND BROADCAST AUDIENCE RESEARCH CONFERENCE.
Under the Conference topic “GETTING THE MOST OUT OF
AUDIENCE APPRECIATION DATA – USING NEW METHODS OF ANALYSIS”,
Liz Landy, Director of Ipsos-RSL Ltd and Simon Scholes, Controller
of Broadcast and Programme Research at Granada Media, UK,
presented a paper to the full conference describing the new
ways to allow their clients to get the most out of their “appreciation
data”.
The paper focused on a number of case studies that demonstrate
how their clients can use the Memphis Media Explorer software
and other methods and analysis to get the most out of the
appreciation data.
A few quotes
Liz Landy, Director, Ipsos-RSL, said in
her paper:
“Clients were developing new ways and ideas as
to how they would want to use the data, but were simply unable
to get the most out of the service from the published reports”.
“Clearly, a system was required that would allow
the end user to fully interrogate their weekly data and the
appreciation index from previous weeks, months and years”.
“The aim was to change the focus of the appreciation
index from a simple programme score to a more complex audience
analysis tool that would allow clients simple and complete
analysis of the data collected over the last two and half
years and onwards”.
“Since it was not economically viable to create
a bespoke interrogation package for the service, it was decided
to seek a development partner to adapt an existing package
that would meet the following criteria:
• a simple windows based, graphical interface;
• the ability to produce both tabular and graphical
formats;
• the ability to cope with the data at both a weekly
and multi-week level;
• the ability to cope with the hierarchical structure
of the data”.
“We achieved this by going into partnership with Memphis
International to design a piece of software which focused
less on being able to do really complex pieces of analysis
and more on being simple, easy to use and visually appealing
– in short an interrogation package for the end user”.
“the software … allows clients to interrogate
the data much more easily than the electronic or hard copy
reports which they received in the past.”
“... much of the real potential of the data from
this survey was untapped, since clients simply did not have
the time to wade through all the data available to find the
really interesting parts.”
“The software changes the very nature of the appreciation
service, taking away the boundaries that have restricted the
use of data.”
Simon Scholes , Controller of Broadcast and Programme
Research for Granada Media said:
“……..we find it a very cost effective
and valuable service, especially with the new methods of analysis
which makes interrogation of the data much faster and easier
to use.”
“When your clients keep asking for the next batch
of audience reaction research, you know that you must be doing
something right!”

and "clipboard". While these conventional methods
are still widely used today, Survey America felt there had
to be a better way of gathering primary data.
Beginning in 1976 when SAI developed and patented the first
mechanical polling machine, the company has been on the leading
edge of survey software development. PollMaker, the world's
first marketing research software designed for use on touch
screen computers, was developed in 1985. For more than ten
years SAI's touch screen SURVEYCENTERSTM
have proven their effectiveness surveying hundreds of thousands
of people across the United States and Canada.
Today, Survey America remains at the forefront of interactive
marketing research with PollMakerTM,
the first touch-screen system that creates surveys, collects
responses, cross-tabulates the data and prints reports.
